Paper Before Posting
Personal Profiles
An idea for the beginning of the year is to create personal profiles. Like an online profile, they provide a platform for students to learn about each other. This opens the door for discussions about sharing personal information for others to see. What is privacy? What can we safely share about ourselves? What types of pictures can we post on a profile? Do we have the right to post pictures of friends without asking? How much information can a stranger get from the personal profile I just created? Personal profiles on paper create a safe environment that can then lead to discussions about online profiles.
Once posted, students can post comments about peoples profiles and begin short “online” conversations. Comments can be posted under the profiles just as they would in an online site. Use these conversations to discuss appropriate online behavior and comments.
Vine, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and blogging are just a few of the ways students can connect online with more avenues being created constantly. Learning how to communicate and be a responsible online citizen develops our students digital literacy and digital citizenship skills.
